THE NAME SEPTARIA COMES FROM THE LATIN WORD “SEPTUM” WHICH MEANS PARTITION AND REFERS TO THE CRACKS/CAVITIES IN THE ROCK.

AROUND 50 TO 70 MILLION YEARS AGO (CRETACEOUS PERIOD) THESE MUD BALLS WERE CREATED BY SEA FLOOR SEDIMENTS. DUE TO VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS, SEASHELLS AND SMALLER SEA LIFE SANK TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA AND STARTED DECOMPOSING WHICH ATTRACTED SEA FLOOR SEDIMENTS. EVENTUALLY THE OCEAN RECEDED AND THE SEPTARIAN DRIED OUT, SHRUNK AND CRACKED INTO THESE BEAUTIFUL CAVITIES.

THE SEPTARIAN IN THE PICTURES ARE ORIGINATED FROM BELGIUM.
